Dr. Tom Thompson was born and raised in Owensboro Kentucky. While he spent most of his childhood working on a pig farm, he decided to attend the University of Kentucky for college and dental school where he met his wife Maryann. They have two sons and a daughter, their oldest son Dr. Dan, and their daughter Kathryn Haire whom both decided to become dentists. Kathryn is currently a 2020 DMD candidate at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, and their son third Chad is a UK Law alum practicing law in Lexington

Dr. Tom graduated from The University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in 1984, followed by commissioning as an officer in the United States Navy upon completion of dental school at UK. While in the Navy, Dr. Thompson achieved the rank of Captain and served our country for 20 years, delivering dental care to our active duty and reservist military members. He completed several years working as General dentist before completing an Advanced Clinical program (Fellowship) in Oral Surgery at Marine Corps Recruiting Depot, Paris Island, SC. After his fellowship, he went on to complete his residency program at Walter Reed Naval Hospital, close to our nation’s capital in Bethesda Maryland.

Dr. Tom and his wife wanted to move back to Kentucky following Dr. Thompson’s time serving as an active duty dental officer in the United States Navy. They settled in Bowling Green after his military retirement in 2001 where Dr. Tom continued to work in private practice for 17 years. After selling his practice in Bowling Green to be closer to his children and family, he now splits time between Georgetown, Kentucky and Beaufort, South Carolina, where he also practices Oral Surgery in Port Royal, SC.

Dr. Tom is a board certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. Dr. Tom and Dr. Dan are both ACLS (advanced cardiac life support) and BLS (basic life support providers). Dr. Tom is excited to join his son working for the River Valley Dental team, and brings over 25 years of experience in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. Both doctors are excited to get the opportunity to provide care to the entire Buffalo Trace region of our state, as well as those in surrounding Ohio counties.

COVID-19 update:

Patients and friends, due to the government mandated shutdown declared in the state of Kentucky – hospitals performing elective surgeries as well as dental offices, we will be closed the majority of this week.

This week we will be open for EMERGENCIES ONLY (see our Facebook page for what defines a dental emergency, or call our office, check our website for updates) on Thursday Morning April 9th. We will require you to complete a questionnaire and speak with a team member or the doctor before we will be able to see you.

Dental emergencies if not addressed can become life threatening (untreated dental infection can lead to swelling, sepsis, and airway issues) so it is necessary to treat certain conditions at this time, which is why we are still offering limited emergency hours. We want to do our part to keep people out of the Emergency Room at this time. We thank our front line healthcare workers out battling this Virus in the hospital and want to help keep dental issues/infections out of the Emergency Room.

These hours will change on a week to week basis as this is a Novel situation that none of us have ever dealt with before. Continue to check Facebook for updates and please wait in the car if you do have to come in for an emergency dental treatment.

We want to assure our patients we are abiding to the highest level of sterilization protocol and following all CDC guidelines as well as the recommendations of the American Dental Association and the Kentucky Dental Association.

We want to comply with social distancing but are still available during the aforementioned hours to care for patients with URGENT AND EMERGENT DENTAL NEEDS. If you have a cleaning scheduled until April 10th, it is cancelled and will be re-scheduled when business hours go back to their customary times.

Thanks everyone, stay safe, stay home, wash your hands, and let us know if you need us.
